Why is the symmetric key transmission a pivotal point of concern in quantum risk?

Symmetric keys, such as those used in Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) encryption, are pivotal for secure digital communication as they encrypt the data exchanged during a session. However, the transmission of these symmetric keys is often secured using asymmetric encryption algorithms like RSA or ECC, which are not quantum-safe and will be cracked by future quantum computers. Once the asymmetric encryption is broken, the symmetric key is exposed, and all past and future data encrypted with that key becomes vulnerable to decryption. Thus, the security of the symmetric key transmission process is paramount in safeguarding data against quantum threats and ensuring the longevity and effectiveness of symmetric encryption methods in a quantum computing era.
